Terms of Service

These terms are the agreement between you and Joseph Hughes ("Tare", "we", "us") for the Tare website and apps. By creating an account or using Tare, you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use Tare.

Using Tare

You need to be at least 18 years old to create an account. Give us a real email address, keep your password to yourself, and tell us at support@tarebudget.com if you think someone else has got into your account. You're responsible for what happens under your account.

What Tare is, and what it isn't

Tare is a budgeting tool. It helps you plan what your money is for and keeps track of what you record or import.

• Tare isn't a bank and doesn't hold, move or transfer your money. When it suggests a transfer or a card payment, you make it yourself, at your bank.
• Tare doesn't give financial, investment, tax or legal advice. Suggestions, forecasts, targets and anything the assistant says are general information based on the numbers in your budget. Decisions about your money are yours.
• Check the numbers that matter. Balances and transactions can be late, missing or wrong, whether you typed them or your bank sent them. Your bank's records are the ones that count.

Bank connections

With Autopilot you can connect bank, card and loan accounts. We use Plaid Inc. ("Plaid") to do this. When you connect an account, you authorize Tare and Plaid to get your account information, balances and transactions from that institution on your behalf, and you agree to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy. You confirm that you're allowed to access the accounts you connect.

Tare only reads account data; it can't make payments or transfers. Banks and Plaid sometimes break connections, delay data or send it with mistakes, and we can't promise any institution will stay available. You can disconnect an account at any time.

The assistant

Autopilot includes an assistant that answers questions about your budget and can propose changes to it. It runs on an AI model from a third party (see the Privacy Policy). Its answers can be wrong or incomplete, so read them with that in mind. It never changes your budget without you approving the proposal first.

Shared budgets

You can invite other people into your budget with a link. Anyone with a live invite link can use it to join, so share it only with the people you mean to invite. The person who owns a budget controls who's in it, its settings and its plan. Everyone in a shared budget can see the shared accounts, categories and transactions, and anything you mark as your own stays yours. When someone leaves or is removed, they take their own budget with them; what's shared stays with the owner.

Plans, trials and billing

Manual

Budgeting by hand is free and doesn't need a card.

Autopilot

• Free trial. Autopilot starts with a 35-day free trial, which needs a card. If you don't cancel before the trial ends, it becomes a paid subscription and your card is charged.
• It renews automatically. Autopilot is billed monthly, in advance, and renews every month until you cancel. The price starts at $12 a month and steps down the longer you stay subscribed, as shown on our pricing page and at checkout. Prices don't include any taxes that apply.
• Canceling. You can cancel at any time in Settings. Autopilot stays on until the end of the period you've paid for (or the end of the trial), and you won't be charged again. Your budget stays, on the free Manual plan.
• Refunds. Payments aren't refunded for partly used months, except where the law requires it.
• Failed payments. If a payment fails and isn't fixed, Autopilot ends and your budget moves to Manual.
• Price changes. We'll tell you at least 30 days before a price change applies to you, and you can cancel before it takes effect.

Payments are handled by Stripe. We don't see or store your full card number. Extra budgets you create are covered by your main budget's plan.

Your data

What you put into Tare, and the data your banks send it, is yours. You give us permission to store, process and display it only as needed to run Tare for you and the people you share a budget with, and as described in the Privacy Policy. We don't sell it.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we can use them without owing you anything.

Rules

Don't:

• use Tare for anything illegal, or to track someone's money without their permission;
• get into accounts, budgets or data that aren't yours, or connect accounts you're not allowed to access;
• probe, overload or interfere with Tare, or get around its limits or security;
• scrape Tare, or use bots to sign up or use it at scale;
• resell Tare, or copy it to build a competing product.

Tare's voice

Tare comments on your budget in its own voice, which can include coarse language and joke ads. You can change its personality and language, or turn it down, in Settings. It's meant as humor, not advice.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings. That cancels any subscription, disconnects your banks and deletes your budgets, as described in the Privacy Policy. It can't be undone. If someone else shares your budget, you'll need to remove them first.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts other people or Tare at risk, or that we're required to close by law. Where we reasonably can, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to get your data. If we ever shut Tare down, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice and refund any time you've paid for but can't use.

Changes

Tare will change over time, and features may be added or removed. We may also update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Tare after that, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can cancel and delete your account.

Disclaimers

We work hard to keep Tare accurate and available, but it's provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We don't promise Tare will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that data from banks will be complete or correct.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, Tare won't be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, overdraft or late fees, or decisions you make based on Tare, even if we were told they were possible. Our total liability for any claim about Tare is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or $50.

Some places don't allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that the law says can't be limited.

You agree to cover Tare's reasonable costs from claims by others that arise from your breaking these terms or misusing Tare.

Disputes

If something goes wrong, email us at support@tarebudget.com first; most problems can be sorted out that way. These terms are governed by the laws of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located there, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it locally.

General

These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about Tare. If part of them can't be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term right away doesn't mean we've given it up. You can't transfer your account or these terms to someone else; we can transfer them if Tare is sold or reorganized. Neither of us is responsible for delays caused by things outside our reasonable control.
