Privacy Policy

Last updated September 28, 2026

This policy explains what Joseph Hughes ("Tare", "we", "us") collects when you use the Tare website and apps, what we do with it, and the choices you have. It's part of our Terms of Service.

The short version

  • We collect what we need to run your budget, and nothing for advertising.
  • We don't sell your data or share it for ads. There are no ad or analytics trackers on Tare.
  • Bank data comes through Plaid, only if you connect an account, and Tare can only read it.
  • You can delete your account, and everything in it, from Settings.

What we collect

You give us

  • Account details: your name and email address. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider, Supabase, and we never see it.
  • Your budget: accounts, balances, categories, targets, transactions, notes and settings you enter.
  • Shared budgets: who you invite, who's in your budget, and how shared money is split.
  • Assistant conversations: what you ask the assistant and what it answers, so the conversation can continue.
  • Messages to us: anything you send when you contact support.

From your bank, through Plaid (Autopilot only)

If you connect an account, Plaid sends us that account's name, type, masked number (the last few digits), balances and transactions, and for cards and loans, details like statement balances, due dates and interest rates. We don't receive your bank username or password, and we can't move money. Plaid's handling of your data is covered by its End User Privacy Policy.

From payments, through Stripe

If you start Autopilot, Stripe collects your card details. We never see or store your full card number; we keep a Stripe customer ID and your plan, trial and billing status.

Automatically

Like any website, our servers and hosting providers log technical details of requests, such as IP address, browser type and time, to keep Tare running, secure and debuggable.

How we use it

  • To run Tare: show your budget, sync your banks, do the math, and let you share a budget.
  • To answer questions with the assistant, when you use it.
  • To bill for Autopilot and send receipts.
  • To send emails you need, like confirming your address or resetting your password, and to show notices in the app, like a bank connection that needs fixing. We don't send marketing email without asking.
  • To help you when you contact support, and to find and fix problems.
  • To keep Tare secure and prevent abuse, and to meet legal obligations.

If you're in the European Economic Area or the UK: we process your data to perform our contract with you (running Tare), for our legitimate interests (security, fixing problems), and to meet legal obligations.

Who we share it with

We share data only with the services that run Tare for us, each for its own part:

  • Supabase — database and sign-in.
  • Vercel — hosting for the website and servers.
  • Plaid — bank connections, if you connect an account.
  • Stripe — payments, if you start Autopilot.
  • Google (Gemini API) — the assistant. When you use it, your message, the conversation so far and the parts of your budget it needs to answer are sent to Google to generate a reply.

We also share data:

  • With people in your shared budget. They see the shared accounts, categories and transactions, and your name and email. Your own budget stays private to you.
  • When the law requires it, or to protect the safety, rights or property of our users, the public or Tare.
  • If Tare is sold or merged, with the new owner, who must keep honoring this policy for the data it receives.

We don't sell your personal information, and we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising as California law defines those terms.

Cookies and local storage

Tare only uses what it needs to work:

  • your sign-in session, kept in your browser's local storage;
  • a small cookie that tells our server you're signed in, so the site shows the app instead of the home page (it holds no personal data or credentials);
  • your light or dark theme choice.

There are no advertising, analytics or third-party tracking cookies. Stripe and Plaid may set their own cookies on their checkout and connection screens to prevent fraud.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your data for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account in Settings, we cancel any subscription, remove your bank connections with Plaid, delete your Stripe customer record and saved card, and delete your budgets and sign-in. Copies in our providers' backups are overwritten on their normal schedule, usually within 30 days. Stripe keeps records of past payments as the law requires.

If you're in someone else's shared budget and delete your account, your own budget goes with you; shared transactions and categories stay in the owner's budget.

Security

Data travels over encrypted connections. Bank access tokens are encrypted before they're stored. Only a small number of Tare staff can look up accounts, only for support and operations, with access limited by role and every action recorded in an audit log. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data, we'll tell you as the law requires.

Your rights and choices

Wherever you live, you can see and correct most of your data in the app, disconnect banks at any time, and delete your account in Settings. You can also email support@tarebudget.com to:

  • get a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • correct or delete it;
  • object to or restrict how we use it, or ask to move it elsewhere.

These rights come from laws like the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act, among others. We'll answer within 30 days (45 for California requests) and may need to confirm it's you first. We won't treat you differently for using them. If you're in the EEA or UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Tare is run from the United States, and our providers may process data in the US and other countries. Where the law requires it, transfers are covered by safeguards like standard contractual clauses.

Children

Tare is for adults 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 13, and we'll delete it if we learn we have.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If the change matters, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
