Choosing between them

Tare or YNAB

The same method, with the same words: Ready to assign, targets, every dollar a job. The difference is credit cards. YNAB moves money into a payment category every time you swipe and pays old balances from the same place; Tare takes purchases straight out of the category and gives old debt its own envelope. Tare also forecasts ahead and has a free plan. YNAB's trial needs no card, its annual plan costs less than Tare's first year, and its mobile apps are out today; Tare's iOS and Android apps are coming soon.

How cards work in Tare

Tare or Monarch

Monarch plans from the income you expect and tracks where it went. Tare budgets the money you already have, one job per dollar. For couples, Monarch shows everyone every account; Tare lets each person keep personal accounts private. Monarch's forecasting is on its Plus plan.

Budgeting together in Tare

Tare or EveryDollar

Both are zero-based and both have a free plan for entering transactions by hand. EveryDollar doesn't handle credit cards, by design; Tare does, including cards you're paying down. EveryDollar Premium's annual price is lower than Tare's.

Credit cards in Tare

Tare or Copilot

Copilot sets spending limits by category and tracks against them, with apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Tare gives every dollar you have a job, and adds a free plan, separate logins for couples, and scenarios for big decisions.
