Where they differ most

The money you have, or the money you expect

Monarch builds each month's plan from the income you expect, then tracks spending against it. That works well when pay is steady and predictable.

Tare only budgets money that's already arrived. Every dollar gets a job, and when you want next month covered before it starts, you hold money back for it. If pay is irregular, turn on holding new income and each month starts already funded.

Couples who don't share everything

In Monarch, everyone in the household sees every account. In Tare, each account is joint or personal. Joint money is budgeted together, personal accounts and categories stay private, and Tare works out each person's share of the shared bills: evenly, by income, or your own numbers.

Forecasting on every plan

Monarch's cash-flow and net-worth forecasts are on its Plus plan, at $199.99 a year. Tare forecasts cash and debt up to two years ahead from your own budget, and lets you try a decision on a copy of it, on the same plan as everything else.

Questions

Switching from Monarch

Does Tare find subscriptions the way Monarch does?

Yes. It finds charges that come back on a schedule, weekly to yearly, adds up what they cost a year, and tells you when a price goes up. It works on hand-entered transactions too. Repeating bills you set up yourself show in Upcoming above each account's register.

Is Tare cheaper than Monarch?

In year one, no: Tare is $132 against Monarch's $99.99 a year. From year two Tare is $96 a year, and its free Manual plan has the whole budget if you'd rather enter transactions by hand.
